THE CHALLENGE THE

· The bridge was likely to have been
constructed between 1846 and 1922, and
has historic significance in this
conservation area
· To remove concerns over the capacity of
the bridge to carry full live loads

THE SOLUTION

· Main cable geometry was refined to a more
efficient shape & the Advance Design model
was used to help confirm our work on this
· Loadings from the model were used to
design new piled foundations & ground
anchors
· Existing cast iron towers were assessed
using Advance Design to determine the load
that could be applied before the towers
reached capacity

was used to assess loads in the cables and towers, as well as to predict deflection. This made use of the large displacement, non-linear capacity of Advance Design, as well as the capacity to model cast iron and steel cable characteristics”.
